National Business Awards - winners announced

Dame Carol Black with Darren Spalding from Marshalls West Lane

The 2008 National Business Awards took place on 18 November in a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel.

The event was hosted by Andrew Marr and included a speech by Lord Peter Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, who highlighted the importance of health and well-being in the workplace.

Congratulations to the Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education and Marshalls West Lane who took out the Health Work & Well-being Award and the Health Work & Well-being Award for Small Business respectively.

Congratulations must also go to the other finalists who contributed to the high standard of competition.

"As these finalists demonstrate," said Lord Mandelson, "those investing in the health of their employees are investing in the health of their bottom line. From reduced absence and lower staff turnover to improved productivity and profitability, the message is clear - good health is good business."

The Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education has successfully tackled specific health issues (eg: stress, musculo-skeletal disorders) and reduced their absence level to 3.23 working days lost pa per person.

Their health and well-being strategy is designed to keep staff fit, healthy and at work and to improve staff engagement. This approach was governed by a desire to provide customers (students and others) with the best possible service.

Marshalls West Lane seek to continually improve their safety performance and reduce both the number and frequency of accidents, whilst remaining committed to their ultimate goal of zero accidents. But they have moved beyond legal compliance and are now committed to maintaining a healthy and sustainable working environment.

Their health and well-being strategy is built around a belief that their entire workforce has the right to work in an environment where all risks to health and safety are properly controlled and that the environment created in the workplace is one where everyone has a voice and the confidence and trust to use that voice to continually improve conditions for all.
